Scar Revision

Scar Revision with Dr. Walter Erhardt in Albany, Georgia

Scars are permanent reminders of previous trauma to the skin. Scar revision is a name given to a group of cosmetic techniques (both surgical and non-surgical) used to improve the appearance of unwanted scar tissue.

If you're self-conscious about a scar, Dr. Erhardt can help. Dr. Erhardt specializes in the latest scar revision techniques and will be able to determine which option will yield the best results for you.

Benefits of Scar Revision

  • While it is not possible to entirely remove an unwanted scar, scar revision can drastically improve the color, size, shape and texture of your scar.
  • Scar revision can be used to reduce the appearance of scars anywhere on your body. The most common types of scars removed during revision include keloids, acne scarring, burn marks, contractures and facial scars.
  • Scar revision is a relatively quick, low-cost procedure that can have a significant impact on your body confidence and self-esteem.

As a general rule, the best candidates for scar revision will possess good overall physical and psychological health, along with realistic outcome expectations. Dr. Erhardt will be able to determine if scar revision is right for you following an in-house consultation.

How Scar Revision Works

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of scar revision. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Procedure: Scar revision can involve a number of surgical and/or non-surgical procedures. Topical treatments (gels, creams or external compression) may be used for mild scarring and discoloration. Injectable treatments can be used to fill in concave scars or flatten raised scars. Surface treatments (dermabrasion, chemical peels, laser therapy) can smooth out textural irregularities. And finally, surgical revision uses excision to physically cut out an unwanted scar. This is typically used in more extreme cases.

Healing time: Your healing time will depend on the type of treatment performed. Topical and injectable treatments usually do not require time off from your daily routines. More invasive treatments may require a week or more of recovery. It is likely that you will experience some swelling, bruising or discomfort in the treatment area. Oral pain medication may be recommended. It is important to protect the treatment area from direct sun exposure during the first several weeks of recovery.

Expected Results: Scar revision can dramatically improve the appearance of an unwanted scar, but it is important to remember that it can never entirely remove a scar. Also, it is difficult to predict how well your scar will react to treatment. Multiple treatment sessions may be necessary to achieve desired results.
