Facial Fat Grafting

Facial Fat Grafting with Dr. Walter Erhardt in Albany, Georgia

As we age, underlying collagen and elastin begin to break down, giving the appearance of fine lines and deep facial wrinkles. Fat grafting is a minimally invasive procedure that has been used for more than 100 years to naturally soften, correct or augment these physical imperfections.

An added benefit of this procedure is that Dr. Erhardt can remove donor fat from trouble areas on your body (e.g., buttocks, abdomen or thighs) and re-implant it into volume-deficient regions.

Benefits of Facial Fat Grafting

  • Fat grafting can counteract signs of aging by filling in sunken cheeks or lines, correcting skin depressions and minimizing forehead wrinkles.
  • Fat grafting can also be used as a natural form of augmentation. Thin lips can be enhanced using your own fat.
  • Donor fat may be liposuctioned from trouble areas in the hips, thighs, abdomen, arms or buttocks.
  • In general, fat grafting is considered safer than many other procedures because it is performed using your own body cells – so there is no chance of rejection. There is also a lower risk of complication.

The best candidates for facial fat grafting are healthy, do not smoke and possess realistic expectations. Dr. Erhardt will be able to determine if fat grafting is right for you following an in-house consultation.

The first known attempt at a fat grafting procedure was performed in 1893, by German physician Franz Neuber. He grafted fat tissue from the upper arm to a patient's cheek.

How Facial Fat Grafting Works

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of brow lift surgery. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Surgery: Prior to your procedure, both the donor and recipient sites will be numbed with local anesthesia. For larger fat grafting procedures, sedation may be used as well. Dr. Erhardt will harvest fat cells from the donor site using a syringe with a large-bore needle or through a liposuction cannula (a thin suctioning tool). The fat cells will be purified and then re-injected into the recipient site.

Healing time: Your recovery will depend on the extent of your procedure. Most patients experience some bruising, swelling and redness at the treatment sites. Most unpleasant side effects should resolve over the course of several days. Dr. Erhardt may provide you with prescription or over-the-counter pain medication to help you manage your discomfort.

Expected Results: Several weeks may pass before the final results of your procedure are evident. If the fat grafting is successful, results can last for several years. Fat has the tendency to be re-absorbed by the body after fat grafting. Anywhere from 10-90 percent may be re-absorbed, in which case, you may require additional treatments to achieve optimal results.
