Eyelid Surgery

With Dr. Walter Erhardt in Albany, Georgia

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to give you a fresher, well-rested appearance by correcting excess baggy skin around your upper and lower eyelids. If your vision is obscured by excess skin and fat deposits, eyelid surgery can also be performed for medical reasons and is often covered by insurance.

Eyelid surgery is one of many facial rejuvenation procedures performed at our cosmetic surgery center. Dr. Erhardt routinely performs eyelid surgery along other procedures such as brow lift or face lift to enhance the final cosmetic results.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

  • Drooping lower eyelids, eye bags and loose skin around the eyes can all see improvements.
  • Crepe paper wrinkles and fine lines around the eyes be diminished.
  • Peripheral vision can improve following the removal of excess skin from the upper lids.

The eyes are one of the most expressive features of the face. But as we age, skin and tissue surrounding the eyes may begin to droop or sag. Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery are healthy and wish to rejuvenate their appearance. Dr. Erhardt will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery following a one-on-one consultation.

How Eyelid Surgery Works

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of eyelid surgery. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Surgery: General anesthetic or intravenous sedation will be administered to ensure your comfort during surgery. Upper eyelid incisions are made in the natural folds of the upper lids – extending from corner to corner. Lower eyelid incisions are made within the lower eyelids. Dr. Erhardt will then remove fat and skin through these incisions, and they will be closed with fine sutures for minimal scarring.

Healing time: When you wake up from surgery, the skin around your eyes will feel puffy and swollen. You should plan on spending the first few days of recovery in bed with your head elevated. Recovery times vary, but in general you should be able to return to your normal routine within 7-10 days. It may take a few weeks before swelling and bruising fully subside.

Expected Results: Following a full recovery, eyelid surgery will result in smoother, more youthful skin contours around the eyes, presenting a more attractive and energetic appearance. Your vision may be improved and your expression will appear more positive. The final results will be long-lasting, but not immune to the natural aging process.
