Earlobe Repair

Earlobe Repair with Dr. Walter Erhardt in Albany, Georgia

Piercing an earlobe places it at much higher risk of tearing or stretching, which can occur due to trauma or after wearing heavy earrings for an extended period of time. Earlobe repair is a simple cosmetic surgery performed to correct torn, elongated or damaged earlobes.

If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your earlobes, you may want to consider earlobe repair with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Walter Erhardt. Dr. Erhardt routinely performs earlobe repair on patients who wish to correct their torn earlobes or elongated piercing tracts.

Benefits of Earlobe Repair

  • Split or torn earlobes can be brought back together and repaired.
  • Elongated or stretched earlobes from wearing heavy earrings or gauges can be normalized in appearance.
  • Following a full recovery, previously torn ears can be re-pierced.

Ideal candidates for earlobe repair are healthy and do not smoke. The best way to determine if you're a good candidate for surgery is to schedule an in-house consultation with Dr. Erhardt.

How Earlobe Repair Works

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of ear surgery. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Surgery: Earlobe repair surgery is a relatively simple procedure performed under local anesthesia. Using  high powered magnification, Dr. Erhardt will carefully trim the skin area around the torn or stretched earlobe to create a more natural curvature of the lobe. Once the excess skin has been removed, Dr. Erhardt will use very thin stitches to suture the wound edges back together.

Healing time: The recovery process after earlobe repair is minimal. It's common for patients to experience some mild discomfort, which is easily alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication. Sutures are typically removed within a week and you should be able to resume work and other normal activities within a couple of days.

Expected Results: Following a full recovery, your ears will appear natural looking with minimal scarring. If you're planning to get your ears re-pierced, it is recommended that you wait at least two months in order to ensure proper healing. The results of earlobe repair are more or less permanent. However, if you resume wearing heaving earrings, there is the chance that you will need revisionary surgery in the future.
