Dermabrasion with Dr. Walter Erhardt in Albany, Georgia

Dermabrasion is a skin refinishing technique. Through the mechanical removal of damaged outer layers of skin, dermabrasion allows new, healthier skin to regrow in its place.

If you're ready to refresh and rejuvenate your skin, Dr. Erhardt can help. He routinely uses dermabrasion to treat scarring and irregular pigmentation as well as various fine lines and wrinkles on the face, hands and other areas of the body.

Benefits of Dermabrasion

  • Creates smoother, healthier skin.
  • New skin is better vascularized and has a more youthful glow.
  • Very useful for treating acne scarring, as well as scarring from warts, injuries or past surgeries.
  • Improves sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, particularly those around mouth and eyes.
  • Can easily be performed in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures.

The best candidates for dermabrasion are healthy, possess realistic expectations and do not smoke. Dermabrasion may not be ideal for patients with darker skin because it can result in hypopigmentation (skin lightening). If you have darker skin, Dr. Erhardt may recommend one or more treatment alternatives.

How Dermabrasion Works

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of dermabrasion. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Surgery: Two weeks before your procedure, you will need to apply a topical cream to prepare your skin for treatment. Local anesthetic will be administered to numb your skin. The outer layers of skin are then removed layer by layer using a dermabrader – a motorized handheld device with a diamond-shaped head. This process should cause very little discomfort and lasts 15-30 minutes.

Healing time: Your skin will be very sensitive, similar to sunburn. This initial redness and swelling will gradually subside over the course of several weeks. Your skin will remain slightly pink for up to three months. You may return to work and other daily routines within two weeks, but it's important to protect your skin from the sun for up to 12 months.

Expected Results: Your results will depend on your initial cosmetic goals. In general, you can anticipate a smoother, more even skin texture and tone. The removal of scars using dermabrasion is permanent. However, changes in skin texture and signs of facial aging will continue to develop with time. Dermabrasion is not a permanent fix for these problems.
