Chin Surgery

Chin Surgery with Dr. Walter Erhardt in Albany, Georgia

A strong, well-balanced chin is a crucial element of facial beauty. Chin surgery, otherwise known as mentoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that can augment or reduce the size of your chin to create a more proportionate facial appearance.

Dr. Erhardt can enhance your chin through the surgical placement of an implant or through reduction surgery on the bone. He routinely performs chin surgery alongside other cosmetic procedures such as a nose surgery or neck liposuction to compliment the new shape of the chin.

Benefits of Chin Surgery

  • Chin reduction surgery can de-emphasize an overly prominent chin
  • Chin implants or advancement of the bone can correct a weak or receding chin
  • Chin surgery can be used to repair birth defects or trauma

The best candidates for chin surgery are healthy, possess realistic goals and do not smoke. Dr. Erhardt will be able to determine if chin surgery is the right procedure for you following an in-house consultation.

The number of chin augmentation procedures skyrocketed by 71% in 2011, with over 20,000 procedures performed. Some say the increase was caused by the rise in online video chatting technology, because webcams are usually situated beneath the face.

How Chin Surgery Works

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of chin surgery. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Surgery: Chin surgery can be performed using general or twilight anesthesia. Dr. Erhardt will begin by making a small incision either inside your mouth (under the lower lip) or hidden underneath your chin. Your procedure may involve facial implant insertion, advancement of your chin bone, or reduction of your chin bone. Following all chin procedures, your incisions will be secured with sutures. Internal incisions will be closed using dissolvable stitches.

Healing time: When you wake up from surgery, you may experience some swelling, pain and bruising. Bandages will be placed against any external incisions to minimize swelling and the risk of infection. Pain medication will also be available to help you manage discomfort. A normal recovery usually takes 1-2 weeks. Strenuous activities should be restricted for 3-6 weeks following chin surgery.

Expected Results: Chin surgery can be used to increase or decrease the prominence of your chin. The final results of your procedure will become gradually apparent as bruising and swelling resolve over the course of a few weeks. At this point, you will notice improved contour and your chin will appear more in balance with your surrounding facial features.
