How Chemical Peels Work

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, chemical peels came in third among the top five minimally-invasive procedures in the U.S., clocking in over 1 million procedures in 2011. However, this was still a three per cent decline from the previous year.

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of your chemical peel options. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Procedure: Light chemical peels are typically composed of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), such as glycolic, lactic or fruit acid. They are applied to the skin using a sponge or brush and then removed after about 15 minutes. Medium and deep chemical peels may take up to an hour to complete and typically require a local or general anesthesia. The solutions are composed of much "heavier" chemicals such as phenol, acetone and trichloroacetic acid capable of penetrating several layers of skin.

Healing time: There is no downtime required after a light chemical peel. You may experience slight discomfort, but you should be able to resume normal activities immediately. Medium and deep chemical peels usually require 3-14 days of recuperation. Your skin will be extremely red for several days, followed by a period of flaking and peeling. Complete healing may take several months.

Expected Results: Following a full recovery, your skin will appear younger and more vibrant. With light chemical peels, results are achieve over a series of sessions. Medium and deeper peels may only require a single session to achieve final results.  Your skin will be very sensitive to sun exposure for several months, so it is important to protect your skin from direct sun exposure.
