Male Breast Reduction

Male Breast Reduction with Dr. Walter Erhardt in Albany, Georgia

Overdeveloped or enlarged male breasts, known as gynecomastia, is an embarrassing condition that affects men of all ages. Male breast reduction can be used to remove excess fat and restore contour to the male chest.

If you're dissatisfied with the contour of your chest area, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Walter Erhardt can help. Using the latest surgical techniques, Dr. Erhardt can reduce and reshape your chest.

Benefits of Male Breast Reduction

  • Though rarely a sign of a life-threatening condition, enlarged male breasts can adversely impact self-esteem and body image.
  • Male breast reduction may be used to correct one or both of the breasts. Asymmetrical development in adult men may signify an underlying medical condition.
  • Male breast reduction can give you a more contoured, masculine-looking chest.

Male breast reduction is a safe and effective way to reduce excess fat, glandular tissue and/or skin surrounding the breast area and restore the breasts to a normal contour. The best candidates are men with stabilized breast development who are at or near an ideal body weight.

Gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) can manifest bilaterally (in both breasts), or unilaterally (in one breast).

How Male Breast Reduction Works

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of male breast reduction surgery. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Surgery: Male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Surgery can be completed using liposuction, excision (surgical removal of tissue), or a combination of both. In cases where liposuction is performed alone, incisions are very small and will be located near your armpits or areola. Where excision is needed, incisions will be placed around the areola or at the natural crease line under your breast.

Healing time: Following surgery, you will experience some swelling, bruising and discomfort for several days. Compression garments will need to be worn for at least four weeks. Dr. Erhardt may also provide you with oral pain medication.

All stitches are generally removed within 1-2 weeks. You should be able to resume work and other daily activities within a week. More strenuous activities should be restricted for several weeks.

Expected Results: Although most of your swelling will subside within the first few weeks, it may be three months or longer before final results are visible. Following a full recovery, you will have a firmer, flatter, more contoured chest.

The results will be more or less permanent, as long as you maintain a stable, healthy weight. It is important to note that permanent scarring is inevitable. Visible scars will gradually fade and flatten over the course of 6-12 months.
