Breast Reduction Techniques

Our Patients Say...

"Thank you! Your expertise, kindness, and sensitivity have been a blessing. I appreciate all of you - Your bedside manner combined with your skill is refreshing - God Bless."

There are three main incision types used during breast reduction surgery. During the consultation process, Dr. Erhardt will help you decide which incision pattern is best for you based on your individual needs and goals.

Anchor incision: This is the standard breast reduction technique and it's best for women who have a large amount of skin and tissue to be removed. The incision begins around the areola (pigmented area around the nipple), extending vertically down to the breast crease and below it in horizontal line.

Keyhole incision: This technique involves an incision that runs along the perimeter of the areola and extends vertically towards the breast crease in a flared pattern.

Doughnut incision: Unlike the other techniques, this pattern only involves a single circular incision made around the areola. Though it results in the least amount of scarring, it is somewhat limited in the amount of tissue that can be removed.

How Breast Reduction Works

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of breast reduction. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Surgery: Breast reduction is typically performed under general anesthesia and sometimes requires a 1-2 day inpatient stay at the hospital. Once you are placed under anesthesia, Dr. Erhardt will make the appropriate incisions. Through these incisions he will be able to remove or reshape excess skin and tissue. In some cases, liposuction may be necessary to eliminate excess fat.

Your nipples may also be moved to a higher position. In very large breasts, the nipples may need to be detached from the underlying blood supply and moved to their new location.

Healing time: One of Dr. Erhardt's primary goals is to help you achieve a safe and comfortable recovery. When you wake up from surgery, your breasts will appear very swollen and bruised. Prescription pain medication will be available to help you manage discomfort.

You will need to wear a special bra for the first several days of recovery. You should be able to resume work in 1-2 weeks, although strenuous physical activity should be avoided for at least a month. Stitches are usually removed within 2-3 weeks.

Expected Results: You will notice immediate improvements, but the final results will not be visible for several weeks to months. Your breasts will need time to heal and settle into place. It is important to remember that permanent scarring is inevitable with breast reduction. The extent of your scarring will depend on the incision pattern used during your surgery. Dr. Erhardt will provide you with instructions on how to minimize scarring.
