Combining Breast Lift Surgery with Implants
Our Patients Say...
A breast lift is not intended to adjust the size or fullness of your bust. If you've experienced a loss of fullness near the top portion of your breasts, or you've just always desired a larger chest, you may want to consider breast implants as a part of your breast lift surgery. Breast implants (saline or silicone) can be placed at the same time as your breast lift surgery.
Breast Lift Incision Patterns
Breast lift surgery is a versatile procedure that is customized to meet your individual needs. There are three basic incision patterns that can be modified to raise, reposition and reshape your breasts:
The "anchor" incision: This pattern involves three different incisions: one around the areola (pigmented area around the nipple), another that extends vertically down the breast from the areola to the breast crease and a final incision that runs horizontally along the breast crease. This technique is often used for women with a significant degree of sagging and may be used in conjunction with breast reduction.
The "lollipop" lift: Also known as a "keyhole" incision, this technique runs along the perimeter of the areola and extends vertically towards the breast crease. This incision pattern is typically reserved for women with a moderate amount of breast sagging who do not desire to combine their breast lift with breast augmentation.
The "doughnut" lift: Unlike the other techniques, this lift only involves a single circular incision made around the areola. It's ideal for women with a mild-to-moderate amount of breast sagging and is often combined with breast augmentation to enhance final results.
How Breast Lift Surgery Works
Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of breast lift surgery. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.
Surgery: Breast lift surgery is an outpatient procedure that requires either general anesthesia or twilight sedation. Surgery is typically completed within 2-3.5 hours. Once you've been sedated, Dr. Erhardt will make the proper incisions. Through these incisions he will be able to remove excess skin from your breasts. If necessary, he will also move your nipple and areola to a higher position on your breasts. During this process, they will remain connected to their underlying blood supply to minimize the risk of sensation loss.
Healing time: One of Dr. Erhardt's primary goals is to help you achieve a safe and comfortable recovery. When you wake up from surgery, your breasts will feel sore and tender. You will also notice some swelling and bruising. You will need to wear a special surgical bra for several days as your breasts begin to heal. You should be able to resume work within a week. You should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity for about a month.
Expected Results: Some results will be visible immediately following surgery, but it will be several weeks to months before your breast tissue has settled and you can see the final results. It is important to remember that permanent scarring is inevitable with breast lift surgery. The extent of your scarring will depend on the incision pattern used during your lift. Dr. Erhardt will provide you with instructions on how to minimize scarring.
