Benefits of Breast Augmentation
- Rounder, fuller breasts that can enhance your figure
- Restoration of the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding

- Greater variety of clothing options
In addition to possessing good overall health, the best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking for improvement, not perfection. Breast augmentation can improve the way you look, but it won't change who you are. The best way to find out if surgery is right for you is to schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Erhardt.
Choosing Your Implants
Breast implants are technically considered medical devices and as such, must be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in breast augmentation surgery. Once you have made the decision to have breast augmentation, you will then have several decisions to make regarding to your actual breast implants.
Our Patients Say...
Saline vs. silicone: Saline implants are filled at the time of surgery with saline (saltwater solution), while silicone implants come pre-filled with a cohesive silicone gel and as a result are less likely to rupture. For a lower cost and shorter surgical incision (about 1.5 inches), saline implants are a popular choice. However, more and more women today are choosing silicone implants because they feel more like natural breast tissue without the “rippling effect.”
Implant textures: Breast implants can be either smooth or textured. Smooth implants have a thinner outer shell, which makes them less likely to ripple than textured implants. Textured implants were designed to reduce the risk of capsular contracture (excessive scar tissue which causes the breast implants to harden), but studies have yet to produce conclusive results.
Implant shapes: Breast implants come in two different shapes: round and anatomic. Round implants are circular and symmetrical. Anatomic (or contoured) implants were originally designed for reconstruction purposes and are shaped like tear drops to mimic the appearance of natural breasts. It is possible for anatomic implants to "flip" so they come with a textured surface to keep them in position.
Implant profile: Implants are available in low, moderate and high profiles. The term "profile" is used to denote how far your implants will protrude from your chest wall. High profile breast implants are usually narrower at the base, so they will cause your implants to appear larger than they actually are, especially if you are petite.
Recognized for his interest and expertise in breast surgery, Dr. Erhardt is also currently participating as a clinical investigator in the FDA pre-clinical trials for Allergan’s cohesive silicone gel breast implants, popularly known as the “gummy bear implants.” If you're interested in finding out if you're eligible for this trial, he would be happy to discuss the details with you during your consultation.
How Breast Augmentation Works
Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of breast augmentation. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.
Surgery: Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that requires either general anesthesia or twilight sedation. Surgery is typically completed within 1-2 hours. Incisions can be placed through the armpit (transaxillary), along the areola (periareolar) or in the fold beneath the breast (inframammary).
Once the proper incisions have been made, Dr. Erhardt will create pockets for your implants either in front of or behind your chest muscle. He will then insert the implants and secure the incisions with sutures.
Healing time: One of Dr. Erhardt's primary goals is to help you achieve a safe and comfortable recovery. When you wake up from surgery, you will experience some pain, swelling and bruising. Bed rest is recommended for the first day or two. A combination of prescription pain medication and cold compresses should make your discomfort manageable.
Stitches should be removed in about a week, at which point you should be able to resume work and other normal routines. Heavy lifting and highly physical activities should be restricted for about a month.
Expected Results: The final results of your breast augmentation will appear gradually over the course of several weeks as swelling subsides. It will take time for your breasts to settle naturally into place. Following a full recovery, you can anticipate fuller, shapelier breasts. It is important to remember that there may be visible scarring, which will fade and flatten over the course of 12-18 months. Dr. Erhardt will provide you with instructions on how to minimize scarring.
