Body Lift with Dr. Walter Erhardt in Albany, Georgia
A body lift, otherwise known as a belt lipectomy, can treat loose skin and tissue present on your abdomen, buttocks and thighs. Significant loose skin and tissue is usually present following the success of major weight loss. By removing this bothersome apron of loose skin, Dr. Erhardt can improve your figure and reveal the full extent of your weight loss.
Body lift surgery is one of many body contouring procedures performed after major weight loss. If you're ready to take the next step, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Walter Erhardt would be happy to provide you with additional details during a one-on-one consultation.
Benefits of Body Lift Surgery
- A body lift is a versatile procedure that can be adjusted to address your trouble areas. It can also be combined with other body contouring procedures to achieve full body improvements.
- Hygiene issues, physical discomfort, excess fat and conditions related to poor tissue elasticity can be resolved with body lift surgery.
- Dimpled skin and surface irregularities commonly known as cellulite can also be minimized using body lift procedures.
The best candidates for body lift surgery will be at a stable, healthy weight. Women considering future pregnancies may want to postpone their body contouring procedures.
How Body Lift Surgery Works
Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of body lift surgery. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.
Surgery: A body lift is typically performed under general anesthesia. Your surgery may take several hours. Dr. Erhardt will begin by making a belt-like incision above your outer thighs and buttocks. The skin will be separated from the underlying tissue. Excess skin and fat will be removed and underlying tissue will be reshaped. An additional horizontal incision will be made on your lower abdomen and around your navel. Through these incisions, Dr. Erhardt will be able to reshape, tighten or remove excess tissue before closing the incisions.
Healing time: In most cases, you should be able to return home the same day of surgery. However, you will need the assistance of a friend or family member. Initial healing will include some swelling, bruising and discomfort. You will be provided with compression garments and oral medication to manage your pain. Recovery times vary, but you should be able to resume light physical activity in 2-3 weeks. More strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks.
Expected Results: A body lift procedure is capable of addressing multiple problem areas in a single operation. The final results will be both functional and cosmetic. Heavy folds of skin will be reduced and the underlying structures that support fat and skin will be tightened. The final results of your procedure may take several months to develop. It's important to note that permanent scarring is inevitable. Your scars will appear raised and pigmented, gradually fading and flattening over the course of 12-18 months.
