Body Contouring After Weight Loss

Body Contouring with Dr. Walter Erhardt in Albany, Georgia

Sometimes losing weight is only the first step in your body transformation. Following major weight loss, many people suffer with excess skin and fat that can't be resolved through traditional diet and exercise. Body contouring is a combination of cosmetic procedures that can improve the shape and tone of your body.

Body contouring is an extremely versatile procedure that can be customized to meet your individual needs. If you're ready to take the next step, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Walter Erhardt would be happy to discuss additional details during an in-house consultation.

Benefits of Body Contouring

  • Body contouring is a set of cosmetic procedures that can be tailored to address your problem areas. If you suffer from excess skin or fat, you may benefit from body contouring.
  • Multiple procedures are often performed during a single surgery. In most cases, this reduces the overall recovery time and cost associated with these procedures.
  • Body contouring is not capable of creating a "perfect" body but it can significantly improve the overall appearance of your body and eliminate common hygiene problems associated with excess skin.

The best candidates for body contouring will have already reached their ideal weight. If you're considering body contouring, you should be at a stable weight for at least one year. Additionally, candidates should be healthy non-smokers who possess realistic expectations.

Fact

Body contouring surgery is the last stage of major weight loss. After surgery, patients need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stable body weight. If body weight changes, sagging spots and stretch marks may reappear.

How Body Contouring Works

Your consultation: During your consultation, it's important to be honest and upfront about your medical history, cosmetic expectations and recovery goals. Your consultation will begin with a physical exam, followed by an in-depth discussion of your surgery. You will also have the opportunity to view Dr. Erhardt's gallery of before and after patient photos.

Surgery: The length of your procedure will depend on which areas are being treated. The most commonly performed procedures include liposuction, tummy tuck surgery, arm lift surgery, body lift surgery and thigh lift surgery. All body contouring procedures require incisions to remove excess skin and fat. Following incision, internal tissue and fat will be removed or repositioned. Muscles may also be tightened. The remaining skin will be redraped over your new contoured shape, and any excess skin will be trimmed away. External incisions will be secured with sutures.

Healing time: Physical instructions will likely include no exercise or weight lifting for several weeks. Sponge baths may also be recommended during the initial stages of recovery. You will be given a compression garment, along with prescription pain medication to alleviate any discomfort. Your recovery time will depend on the number and extent of procedures performed. Most patients can resume normal activities within 2-4 weeks. The final results of your procedure will gradually become visible as swelling and bruising resolve over the course of several weeks.

Expected Results: Although body contouring cannot give you the perfect body, it can drastically improve your physical appearance. Body contouring is used to effectively address loose, heavy folds of skin, as well as improve the shape and tone of tissue in the thighs, arms, buttocks, abdomen and face. As long as you maintain a healthy weight, the final results of your body contouring procedure will be more or less permanent.
